AutoNation Inc. said today that its new-vehicle sales increased 3 percent last month to 16,564 compared with June 2010, below the overall U.S. sales gain.
Total U.S. auto sales increased 7 percent in June. For the first time since September 2008, Detroit automakers made more than half -- 52.3 percent -- of the industry's sales.
AutoNation said its domestic-brand sales rose 18 percent to 5,638. Premium luxury sales grew 11 percent to 3,362 in June compared to the same period last year.
June-over-June import sales, on the other hand, declined 9 percent to 7,564 as Japanese automakers continue to face parts shortages resulting from the March earthquake and tsunami.
Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. and Honda each reported a 21 percent decrease in June sales on Friday. Nissan posted an 11 percent jump in June sales.
